Solent Swim 2026: 76 Swimmers, 76 Stories of Courage and Determination
On Saturday 25th July, 76 incredible swimmers will take on West Wight Sports and Community Centre’s annual Cross Solent Swim. Every participant has their own personal reason for accepting this extraordinary challenge, making this event about so much more than simply crossing the Solent and raising essential funds for the charity that runs the Centre.
Among this year’s swimmers are three dedicated West Wight Swimming Club coaches – Lottie James, Bethany Williams and Jack Pickford – who continue to inspire the next generation of swimmers both in and out of the pool.

One of the many inspiring stories is that of brothers Michael and Clive Bullock, who are swimming together while raising funds for West Wight Sports and Community Centre and prostate cancer support.
Michael (76) and Clive (71) may be brothers, but their swimming abilities couldn’t be more different. Michael has scoliosis, which has left him with a significant stoop, and for many years found both breaststroke and front crawl difficult. However, through encouragement, support and determination, alongside the guidance he received at West Wight’s weekly Special Care swimming sessions, he has become a confident – if, in his own words, “ungainly” – backstroke swimmer.

Clive, meanwhile, is a GB international age-group triathlete. On event day, however, his focus won’t be on speed or personal achievement. Instead, he’ll be moderating his pace so that he and Michael can complete the Solent Swim side by side.
Adding even greater significance to their challenge, both brothers are currently undergoing treatment for prostate cancer. In addition to supporting West Wight Sports and Community Centre, they have pledged to donate a share of any funds they raise beyond their target to prostate cancer support, helping others facing the same diagnosis.
Their story is one of resilience, determination and the power of family – qualities that perfectly capture the spirit of the Solent Swim.
Centre Manager and event organiser, Clare Griffin said;
“Every donation, no matter how big or small, will make a real difference to the work we do. By supporting our swimmers, you’ll be helping West Wight Sports and Community Centre continue to provide vital facilities and activities for the local community. One of the main focusses of our work remains teaching children to swim – which is why the community built the pool 50 years ago. It’s important to us that we keep swimming lessons affordable to local families, and, if necessary subsidised to those in need”
The local community is also invited to come along to Colwell Bay, Freshwater, on the morning of Saturday 25th July to cheer on the swimmers as they complete their remarkable challenge. The first swimmers are expected to begin arriving at the beach from approximately 8.00am, and every cheer from the shore helps spur them on during the final stages of their crossing.
