History Of The Isle of Wight Festival

The Isle of Wight is known for being one of the most amazing places to visit in the United Kingdom and it has lots of incredible tourist attractions for the whole family to enjoy. Whilst there are so many different things to see and do on the Isle of Wight all year round, from visiting beautiful beaches and animal sanctuaries to exploring heritage sites and picturesque villages, the island commonly welcomes more visitors in June than any other time of year when the Isle of Wight festival is on.

If you’ve heard of this festival before but you don’t really know much about it or you didn’t even know it exists, keep reading today. Below is a brief history of this incredible festival and everything that you need to know if you’re interested in attending in the upcoming years.

What is the Isle of Wight festival?

As the name suggests, the Isle of Wight festival is a music festival that is hosted here on the island at Seaclose Park. It is the first major festival in the UK summer calendar every year and it sets the tone for the whole of the summer festival season.

When was the first festival?

The very first festival was held at Ford Farm on the 31st August and the 1st September 1968. With around 10,000 attendees, it was very small in size when compared to how many people attended the Isle of Wight festival these days.

Over the next couple of years, the festival moved locations and continued to increase in popularity, seeing hundreds of thousands of attendees each year. But there was no festival in 1971 and it didn’t actually come back until 2002 when John Giddings decided to re-launch it.

In 2002, the festival then found its home where it has been ever since at a recreation ground on the outskirts of Newport. Now, it is more popular than ever before and tickets sell out incredibly fast, so if you’re interested in going, be sure to get your tickets ASAP.

Who has performed at the festival?

Over the years, it is fair to say that some of the biggest names in music have performed on the main stage at the Isle of Wight festival. Headline acts include the likes of David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Fleetwood Mac and many more music legends.

Of course, like all other festivals, you can always rely on the Isle of Wight festival to keep up-to-date with the most popular music stars and every year the main stage greets some of the biggest and most listened to artists from the past year.

Why is this festival so popular?

Many enjoy attending the Isle of Wight festival because not only is it a multi-genre festival but it is also perfect for music lovers of all ages. With family-friendly areas around Seaclose Park, if you want to experience a festival with your children, this is also the perfect choice.

How expensive are the tickets?

Thankfully, although the Isle of Wight festival is absolutely incredible, it isn’t as expensive as some of the other popular festivals in the UK. You can purchase both day tickets and weekend tickets and the prices for 2021 are around £70 for a day ticket and £185 for a weekend ticket.

Many appreciate the fact that there are also student tickets, teen tickets and children tickets available. Not to mention the fact that infants up to the age of 5 will be completely free, and if you live on the island then your ticket is cheaper too.
