The Mottistone Long stone is part of the historical Isle of Wight landscape dating back to Neolithic times. According to legend the Devil and St Catherine once held a competition to see who should control the Isle of Wight. The Mottistone long stone was supposedly thrown by St Catherine from the Down (now know as St Catherine’s Down) in the east beating the devils and winning control of the Island.
