Monks Bay, Bonchurch, Isle of Wight

Monks Bay, Bonchurch is situated on the southeast coast of the Isle of Wight,  just to the east of the village of Bonchurch. Monks Bay is thought to be where French monks from Lyra Abbey landed from Normandy. It is one of those places that once visited, you will want to go back again and again. It is tucked away in the village of Bonchurch and is a true “Wight Secret”.

There is limited parking on the seafront, but as you drive down Shore Road in the village, you will see a car park.  Stop there and then take the short walk down the rest of Shore Road to the beach. The bay has a line of large terraced, period houses and small cottages which look out to the English Channel.  It is also home to Bonchurch Pottery and there is a lovely, level revetment walk that leads to the larger coastal town of Ventnor. The area was notable as a venue for smuggling rings. The bay was used to disembark cargo from ships which would then be transported into the island. Once a major source of income, fishing for local lobsters and crabs continues to occupy fisherman in this area.
