Bermuda House has a place in history as the place in which the celebrated English composer, Sir Edward Elgar, spent his honeymoon in May 1889. This is commemorated by a blue plaque on the wall outside. From the house Sir Edward wrote to a friend “We are liking this place very much and have nice rooms overlooking the sea…”
Since Sir Edward’s time the house has undergone a massive but sympathetic renovation and in now enjoyed by families for their holidays. It is in Alexandra Gardens, right in the centre of Ventnor, with two minutes’ walk to the shops or in the opposite direction to the beach. Look out of the windows and there are outstanding sea views from the front and downland views from the rear. Outside is a private road with exclusive parking for two medium sized cars and there is a private fully enclosed cliff-top grassed garden with a tropical tree. Within ten minutes’ walk there are numerous places to eat and drink.
The property has high ceilings with chandeliers, fine cornicing and ceiling roses and a lovely carved staircase. Bermuda House is the ideal base for a family holiday on the Island or to get the wider family together to celebrate a special occasion. Up to ten people can stay in five bedrooms. A well-equipped massive front to back kitchen/diner is an outstanding feature of the building and there’s a large screen HD satellite Smart TV in the main living room. Wooden flooring has been fitted, and the house is decorated and furnished in a contemporary but sympathetic style. There is full-fibre WiFi throughout the building.
Some of the best places on the Island to eat and drink are within ten minutes’ walk of the house, including the Royal Hotel, Hambrough, Smoking Lobster, True Food Kitchen and the Spyglass Inn. The Royal Hotel and Smoking Lobster have recently featured as good places to eat on Channel 4.
