Red Funnel continues Remembrance Sunday commemorations with free travel for UK Armed Forces
Monday 2nd November: In recognition of the dedication and sacrifice of the UK Armed Forces, Red Funnel is offering past and present serving UK military personnel free foot passenger ferry travel this Remembrance Sunday weekend and Armistice Day on 1th November.
The offer will be available on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th November to mark Remembrance Sunday, and again on Wednesday 11th November for Armistice Day, with free foot travel available in either direction across both Red Funnel’s Red Jet and vehicle ferry services.
The free travel offer follows Red Funnel’s partnership with the Royal British Legion, which saw the first poppy boxes travel to the Isle of Wight ahead of Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day. On Thursday 22nd October, the boxes made a symbolic journey across the Solent aboard Red Funnel, with a convoy and water cannon salute marking its arrival on the Island.
The journey recognised the importance of Remembrance Sunday and the Isle of Wight’s longstanding military connections, while reflecting Red Funnel’s own maritime heritage and longstanding connection with the Armed Forces and veteran community. That history includes Red Funnel’s involvement in the evacuation of Dunkirk during the Second World War, adding particular significance to its role in transporting remembrance poppies to the Island.
Fran Collins, CEO of Red Funnel, said: “Remembrance Sunday is an important opportunity to recognise the commitment, service and sacrifice of those who have served, and those who continue to serve, in our UK Armed Forces. We are proud to offer free foot passenger travel across our services as a small gesture of our appreciation and gratitude.”
The offer can only be claimed in person at Red Funnel’s ticket offices by presenting either a MOD Form 90 ID card (including expired cards for veterans) or a UK Armed Forces Veteran ID Card. Veterans without an ID card can also present a Veterans Rail Card or Defence Discount Card.
