Tales of Newtown

To celebrate the centenary of the first act to give women the right to vote, join our guided tour to discover how the history of the Old Town Hall owes much to the mysterious all-female Ferguson’s Gang.

This group of pioneering women was instrumental in raising awareness of the need to protect and preserve valuable places, such as the Old Town Hall, but they did it in an eccentric way. By wearing masks and using fictitious names such as Red Biddy, Sister Agatha and Bill Stickers, they were able to save the Hall and give it to us in 1933.
