About Dinosaur Farm Museum

Situated on the A3055, the Military Road which joins Blackgang to Alum Bay, not far from Atherfield Holiday Camp at Lower Sutton Farm. Look for the Dinosaur Sign. Postcode PO30 4PG.

Dinosaur Farm was established as a private museum in 1993 after the discovery of a brachiosaur-like skeleton now known as the Barnes High Sauropod. The exhibition evolved from a cattle shed from the old dairy farm to three renovated rooms including the large barn dating back to 1662 with its original wooden roof beams. Formerly staffed by a group of volunteers and students, the museum benefitted from a friendly atmosphere where visitors could talk to the staff and watch real bones being cleaned and refurbished for display. In 2001 it was the base for the BBC program Live From Dinosaur Island featuring Bill oddie and Adam Hart-Davis. In 2008 we were included in the BBC series The Fossil Detectives.

In summer 2007 Martin Simpson, the Island's 'Fossil Man', took over the exhibition with a small team of dedicated colleagues. This year, 2010, is the last year of opening for the museum at this site, but Martin has big plans to relocate and expand in 2011. Watch this space for details!

The museum remains popular with children. We were recently long-listed in the top 20 for the Guardian Family Friendly Museum Award 2009. Every visitor is offered a guided tour of the buildings and there are a variety of hands on activities for the children. We also offer a free fossil identification service and there is a small giftshop where you can buy your own prehistoric souvenirs.

Guided fossil hunts are organised to local beaches every day in the peak season up to Sept 5. To book simply phone or email us or drop in and see us at the museum. You can pay on the day. Tickets are also available at the Island Tourist Info Centres.
